200px-Harishchandrachi_Factory,_2009_film_poster

Last week I saw 2 Marathi movies. And both were really good movies. Harishchandrachi Factory and Zenda.

Let me first talk about “Harishchandrachi Factory”. A simple movie about Father of Indian film industry, Dadasaheb Phalke. Instead of trying to create “Hero” out of Phalke, the director simply wanted to show the way made his first film in a simple, humorous way. He has not tried to create emotional situations when an ordinary director could have added the usual “rona-dhona”. I remember on the scenes where Phalke is leaving for London, and he is walking down the stairs. He goes down few steps and then comes back to his wife and tells her in ears “हे सगळे तुझ्यामुळे घडतंय”(All this is happening because of you). Nice movie, watch it, and watch it in theater :)

Zenda1

Zenda!! What can I say? I have hardly seen any movie which resembles reality so much and I guess that is what I don’t like about it. Either you tell complete truth or don’t tell. Partial reality and produce bias results. If someone who doesn’t know about Thackeray would just pass it on as a Political movie. I was surprised to see the usual sign of “Story is fictitious, any connection with reality is co-incidence”. Bull Shit!! Anyone would identify the politicians shown with their real counter parts.

The movie is about split in Sena that happened after the heir was declared. It is about 4 young Marathi guys whose life is changes after this. It shows how the cadres of the party have to suffer while the high command sits at the top giving orders and playing pity politics for their own desire for power.

I felt that Raj Thackeray and Narayan Rane’s character were shown negatively. I don’t know whether they are what they are shown in the movie but problem is when you show so many things matching with reality, then there is a possibility that viewer might consider others as real incidents as well. Of course, in terms of music, acting the movie is as good as any Bollywood flick.

I guess following 2 lines from the title song sum up the movie -

भक्ताच्या कपाळी अन् सारखीच माती तरी

झेंडे एगळे, वेगळ्या जाती

One common thing about the 2 movies is that my school mate, Ketan Karande, from Chikitsak has acted in both movies :)

My favorite Dialogue : Vegeta's Respect

I wanted to publish this since long time, but always postponed it, waiting for the right time. Well actually it is not a dialogue, since only one person is speaking.  This dialogue is from my favorite Cartoon serial DragonballZ and is spoken by my favorite character Vegeta . The scene is in the climax of the serial, in one of the final episodes. To give you an idea why I like it, let me give you some idea about DragonballZ . The characters Goku and Vegeta are one of the most important characters in the series. Goku, the protagonist, who is actually an alien from a planet called Vegeta and is one of the last of his race Saiyan . But unlike the Saiyans who are naturally aggressive, fight-loving, brutal, strongest warriors in the world, he is very calm, naive. He hates to be a Saiyan, when he realizes that he belongs to such a killing race. According to his blood line and roots on planet Vegeta, he is a third grade soldier in the Saiyan Army. On the contrary, Vegeta is the Prince o...

Sawai Ekankika’ 2013

So this year I completed a hat trick of watching the finals of Sawai . Like the previous 2 occasions, this too was a great experience. Most of the plays were good and the overall performance level was better than that of the 2012 finals. Most of the plays were based social issues like parenting, cynicism among the middle class, etc. Unlike the previous finals, not a single one was of romantic/love genre. Here is the list of finalists- Nat S. M. R. T. We missed this one as we were late. But Viraj's father told us, this was similar to the play " Natasamrat " but a modern version. Emotional Atyachar This was a story of an employee in an e-CRM firm which is hired by clients so that someone can communicate with their family. These clients are too "busy" with their work that they don't have time to speak with their wife/kids/parents. The agent/employee E26 slowly starts getting emotionally attached with his clients' families. Finally, when he is about t...
