Life @ NITIE: Day 75

15 more days to go for the exam and the submissions deadlines have started pouring in. After 75 days in NITIE I can say that I have settled down quite well here. I am still not bored of the mess food and have in fact decided to quit drinking Tea. Progress in the various subjects has been based on my interest. So even though we have made 3 PPTs on marketing, I still don’t have clue about the 5Cs and 4Ps. On the other hand, with hardly any practice of Business Stats, I still like the subjects (This seems to me like the repeat of Mechanics in FE where everyone hated it and I liked it). Ops, POM, IE are also going along nicely. I have had nice experience during Communication Skills lectures with our Prof encouraging everyone to interact more with the class asking people to take initiative to improve the public speaking skills. Last but not the least, it turned out to be boon that our previous Eco Prof left the institute for IIT Indore, as the new teacher much faster...

Ganeshotsav ‘09

Confused!!!

Damn these seniors… They had to organize the fresher’s party on this Friday only??? Now, I either have to miss final day Ganesh Aarati at my home or miss my final fresher’s party :(

Stylish

I have been really impressed by the “Stylish” extension in the Firefox. I tried using it with my Google Reader UI, after few CSS tweaks I came up with this. Before Styling After Styling

Random

Whenever Susmit and I make a plan, it always happens that things don’t occur the way we plan. We are disappointed, but then it turns out that better unplanned things happen. Right Susmit??

Movie Reviews

Till now, I have seen 4 movies in NITIE hostel. I liked 2 of them. Here is the list- X-men Origin This one was the best X-Men movie I have seen. The first 3 instalments were more about the overall Mutant community and hence the fight between Humans and Mutants. This one was about the life of Logan, my favourite character in X-Men. Hugh Jackman was at his very best when it came to playing Wolverine. I did not know about Wolverine and Sabor Tooth being half brothers. Even the fact that both of them are immortal as long as they are not beheaded even before Logan’s blood is replaced with the element X, was not known to me. It was little surprising to see Gambit as he didn’t make any appearance in the earlier trilogy. Logic used for removing Logan’s memories was also well thought, as his firing a bullet in his head would create a wound, the brain cells would be regenerated but his memories can’t. If you have not seen the movie, do watch it. Coming up… Euro Trip The Han...

Windows 7 Rocks!!!

View Full Album It has been more than 3 weeks since I have been using Windows 7 now. It has been scintillating experience using it. It is not Vista with bug fixes, it is much more than that. It has much better usability as compared to Vista or even XP. The new task bar is much more convenient. I have installed Launchy but I hardly have to use it. The new task bar has many good features such as window and tab preview, pinning the app, jump menu, grouping notification icons. I haven’t much used the start menu as well because of the task bar.      Apart from this Windows 7 has corrected a lot of explorer related issues also. I always had a problem in Vista accessing my favourites in Explorer, the folder pan was too big, the preview pan at the bottom was too large. All this has been corrected with some additional features such as “Libraries”. Here there are sections like “Documents”, “Music”, “Pictures” and “Videos”. These are not just f...

Naruto Download

I had subscribed to Hathway Cable net, since we still have not received a Landline from MTNL. I had opted for the 2 months 2 GB plan. It turned out that I couldn’t even use 1GB in the first 2 months(Thank god they a carry forward strategy). Now, I have more than 2GBs to download with 15 days in August to go. I have started downloading Naruto episodes from NarutoCentral. Lets see how much do I utilize my bandwidth…

Back to Home

It has been 3 days now since I came back from NITIE. One of the students from our hostel was tested positive for Swine flu and it started a big panic wave across the college. There were rumors of some more people being affected by Swine flu. We, section C of IM-16 batch, had planned our 5 day holiday between 15-19 August, so we had not lost lectures during Raksha Bandhan time. So as was expected many people started fleeing back to your home. People were asked to wear masks while going out in places of public gathering like mess.      It Monday when the news of one of our batch mate having swine flu broke out. On Tuesday there were just 20 of us attending the 2 lectures, and on Wednesday just 8 people appeared for the IE lecture. Since, many people were going to leave by Wednesday, irrespective of whether lectures are cancelled for 13-14th or not, our CR, Sudhakar, decided to call up all the teachers and cancel the lectures. Once the lecture...

5 things I like about myself

Here are 5 things I like about myself. I am sure there will more things in me which people like and I would request them to reply back in comments section about the same. Sarcastic I don’t talk much usually, but when I do I make every word of it count. I guess sarcasm is in my blood. My dad and mom also used sarcasm to actually “tackle” my mistakes and that has made me learn the “sarcasm” hard way. Usually my sarcasm is used to produce humour without hurting the person targeted. One example of it – we were having a mid term test in VJTI where answer sheets were A4 size journal papers. I think someone gave Naresh only 1-2 sheets, so he asked me to give more papers. I was really irritated by this, as he was as it is going to copy someone else’s paper. My reply was, “इतके पेपर्स कशाला हवे आहेत? तुला काय ग्रन्थ लिहायचा आहे का?” (Meaning – Why do you need so many? Are you going to write a novel?)(More could be found on Sankalp’s blog) Keeping friends I take a lot of time to ...

Whoa!!!

I can’t believe this. My name on gnome website!!! Last year, I decided to take part in gnome translation project, I worked with Sandeep Shedmake (who is the person in charge of Marathi Translation) on Bug Buddy. I did my best in the 1 month I worked, because afterwards I had to give time to office work and CAT stuff. All in all, it was nice experience working on it.      Today, I tried searching my name on Google. As expected the blogs on which I had left my comments appeared first and then on 2nd page I found this link: http://www.gnome.org/~shaunm/pulse/web/files/l10n/i18n/svn.gnome.org/bug-buddy/po/gnome-2-24/mr.po   Proud to be associated with Open source, may be not as a coder but at least as a translator!!!

Theme Update….

So I am not as bad HTML coder as I thought myself to be. It has been really joyful changing the blogger theme. I have always been striving for more, especially when I find myself being creative about something. The initial theme update was facilitated by the original Wordpress theme. But after that I have been using my creativity to make the blog visually more appealing. Of course, I had been lucky enough to get feedback from my friends, like the one suggested by Vinay, to use simpler fonts (I was using Tekton and Bradley ITC fonts earlier).      I still feel that I can improve it, especially the Header image. Even though many have told me that they liked Header image, I always wanted to have Header image with most of friends in it. But I have not been able to conjure up such an image!! Need to be more creative on that front.

Countdown begins

I took Ops test today. It was not really as difficult as people were making it to be. In fact, I happen to complete the paper 15 minutes before the time and Prof actually went through my answer sheet and looked impressed. I was surprised to find that people wanted 10 min extension. When I submitted the paper after verifying all the answers, Prof told me that I could solve the optional problem also in the remaining time. After the test I found a very funny thing, half of the class didn’t read the instructions and tried solving all the questions. No wonder they wanted extra time!!!      Lectures for today are over. We have holidays starting from 15th till 19th August. So four more days of lectures before I head for home…

Mid-term exam

Tomorrow I have my first mid term exam… By the way, I just remembered some work pending, I had been assigned a “tag”, which I need to complete. I will start working on it from tomorrow.

One of The Best Party Ever…

What an evening!!!! Thank you Aditya, Vikram and Susmit for the dinner. I had an awesome time with you all!!!

Mandi ‘09

Background Mandi is unique exercise in NITIE where all the students of NITIE junior batch go to Mumbai Streets to sell educational toys. The toys are made by an NGO called “Navnirmiti” . The money collected from this exercise is given to the NGO. This allows the students to interact with normal people who are their customers, convince them to buy the product. The tag line of the event is Socho Becho Becho Seekho Seekho Socho Before The Mandi Day I decided to team up with Shiwam. Some of us from section C decided to go together. Since I was the only Mumbaikar in the group, I was asked about the places to visit. I thought Dadar station, Shivaji Park, Lower Parel and Phoenix mills compound was a good area to sell the stuff. The day before Mandi we got total 20 toys – 3 Big Jodos, 7 small Jodos, 2 Rangometry kits and 8 Tangrams. We also got Mandi T-shirts who was designed by a group in my batch who have made start up company in T-shirt design (smart people aint they? Ev...

Audio – Visual Exercise

I had my audio-visual exercise today. In communication skills subject each of the student has to speak on the topic of his choice for around 5 minutes. I was given Monday’s slot of 3pm. Initially I wanted to talk about some incident in my life, but then I had given an “observatory” speech already during CS lecture. I did not want to repeat the flow. So I thought of speaking on sub-prime crisis. I had given a talk on the same last year when I was in Netcore. I got some information on the topic from Wikipedia. Problem was remembering the whole stuff. Just before the presentation I got the printout of the doc and started reciting it. When I reached the audio-visual cell of NITIE, Shruti was talking in front of the camera. Then Shuchita started her speech on twitter. At that time I realized that instead of talking about Sub-prime crisis by looking the paper, I could actually talk passionately about some software/web service. And what can be better than Google Reader...

So How do I look?

Saturday Chronicles

It was one of those amazing evenings I ever had. I mean, how many times does it happen that your 2 groups of best friends call you at the same place, same day, same time. It happened with me last Saturday. Kanchan, who is my classmate from Chikitsak has come back from Italy, so she wanted to meet her Chikitsak friends. Since most of the people are free on Saturday evening, she told us to meet opposite Aquarium at the sea face (we call it Katta).      During the same period, my old school’s friends (from Sundatta High School) were planning a small get-together. Nitin had contacted many of my classmates to come to Marine Drive sea face. He called me and told me the same date and time as Kanchan had told me. He really wanted to meet everyone. I could make out from his voice, he was so much excited. Since, it would have looked really bad to say NO to any of the two groups, I decided to meet them one by one, may be give half an hour to old schoo...
